I deeply appreciate your gracious action in dedicating the
Year-Book of nineteen forty-two to me. Although it is upwards
of five years since I retired as principal of the Clayton
High School, my interest in all that concerns the educational
progress and school activities of our young people has continued
without abatement.
This book, the product of the cooperative enterprise of
your class, has provided opportunity for the exercise of the
various talents and special abilities of those contributing to
its make-up, and thus has afforded them training of a very
practical character.
A group activity of this kind, with its community of interest
and sharing of responsibility, is of undoubted educational
value, since it closely relates to a real life situation and
so identifies the school with the workaday world.
In addition to the educational benefits derived from the
carrying to completion of such a project, there is the reward
to be found in the joy of achievement and the satisfaction that
results from a task worthily accomplished.
This book, with its record of school activities, biographical
notes and pictures, will be a treasured memento of your school
days and associations, one whose sentimental value and interest
will increase with the passing of the years.
Most sincerely yours,
J. L. CUMMINGS.
